Signed by Ghostly

Questions

Straight answers about what Ghostly does, what it doesn't, and what happens to your files.

The basics

What does Ghostly do?

It hides an invisible signature in your 3D print files and registers each design to you. When you find a copy somewhere, you upload it to Ghostly and it tells you whether it's yours and which copy it came from.

Is it a watermark?

In a way: a watermark you can't see, plus a registration of your design. Unlike a logo or text added to the model, it doesn't change how the model looks.

Which files work?

3MF and STL, or a ZIP of them, up to 150 MB per upload. Signed copies come back in the same format you uploaded.

How long does signing take?

About two minutes for a small model. Large, detailed models take longer. You can close the page and come back.

Printing

Will my files print differently?

No. Every signed copy is sliced and compared with your original before you get it. If signing would change how a copy prints, Ghostly leaves the hidden part of the signature out of that copy and tells you. That copy is still registered and labeled to you, and it prints exactly like your original.

Can buyers see or feel anything?

No. There's no logo, no text and no extra part, and nothing changes on the surface of the print.

Does it change my original file?

Never. Ghostly makes new signed copies and leaves your original alone.

Copies and checks

What is a copy?

A separately signed version of the same design for one place you sell. If you sell on your own shop, Etsy and Patreon, you make three copies, and a check tells you which of the three a file came from.

What happens when I check a file?

You get one of three answers: Signed (the owner, the design and the exact copy), Registered design (it matches a registered design but carries no signature, like a copy that was never signed), or No match.

What if the file was edited?

Edited files still work. Ghostly is built to recognize your design after the kinds of changes people make to files they didn't create. In our tests it traced every changed file back to its design, and in most cases to the exact copy.

Can I check someone else's file?

Yes. Any account can check any file. If it's signed, you see whose it is. Checks never show anyone your files.

Protection

Can someone remove the signature?

Nothing hidden in a file is impossible to remove, and we won't pretend otherwise. Ghostly makes it hard: each file carries several separate kinds of proof, and the everyday edits people make don't remove them.

Why won't you explain how it works?

Because a signature with public instructions is a signature someone can learn to strip or fake. We're open about what Ghostly does and what it can't do. How it does it stays private.

Does Ghostly stop people copying my files?

No tool can stop a determined person from sharing a file. Ghostly makes it provable that a copy is yours and shows which copy it was, so you can act on it with evidence.

Will Ghostly file takedowns for me?

Not today. Ghostly gives you the evidence: the owner, the copy and the date the design was registered, plus a certificate for each design.

Your files and account

Do you keep my files?

Ghostly keeps what it needs to recognize your designs when someone checks a file. Your files are never shared, sold or used for anything else.

What happens if I cancel?

Files you've signed stay signed and your designs stay registered to you. Checking needs an account, and the free plan always includes checks.

Who makes Ghostly?

Independent 3D print designers who sell files of our own. We built Ghostly for our own files first. More about us.

How do I start?

Create a free account and sign your first design. The free plan includes three designs and ten checks a month. Start free.

Still wondering?

The best answer is trying it on one of your own files. The free plan signs three designs.
